Prelim Pop Promo CD Cover

Once we had filmed our prelim, part of the project was to create a CD cover for the single. This is my finished piece. I decided to make it simple so that it stands out more, when looking for images i thought of having one that represented the song, so i chose a human heart in the shape of a cartoon heart. I then used photoshop to take the bands logo from a picture we had of the drum kit and placed this at the top along with the record label logo at the bottom.

A2 Prelim Pop Promo Evaluation

For our A2 pop promo prelim task we shot a section of the music video of Dr Vs Cupid by the up and coming band Acres of Life. We shot the video and edited it within the morning of June 21st 2011. The experience was invaluable and told us what we would need to do for our final coursework piece next year.

Before the day of the shoot we had to think up the shot choices in a time line and then in storyboards for the video. We decided as the whole video was based around the performance element, we wanted to show lots of close ups of the main singer in the band to give him privilege and show that he was an important role in the band. We also decided that the first shot of the video should be a wide shot to show the band as a group. We wanted to time in the shots of the drums with the music which in the end worked out well as it showed the beat of the music video. The opening could have been better if we had the time, for instance we would have liked to have had a tracking shot of the set before focusing in on the band. This wasn’t possible though so in the end we decided to have a basic wide shot.

Throughout the morning we all revolved positions. These included directing, camera work, assistant director and calling playback. The main roles I performed were controlling the camera for the beginning shots that we filmed. After this we switched around positions and I took over the role of calling the playback and working the sound. Other members of my group took charge of directing, but we all had a turn on the camera.

We worked well as a team and all used our strengths to their advantages. We all had a similar idea about how we wanted the video to be shot which meant the process of the morning was much easier as we could all agree. We didn’t have any disagreements which meant that the morning ran smoothly and we were able to get on with the filming of the video and were able to make a good final product.

By the end of the day we were able to look back and be pleased about our final product. The footage that we shot met our storyboards and timeline well. There were a slight few changes in our final product but they weren’t much and we liked the final video very much. From our first foundation year of media we could take the knowledge that we used from filming our thrillers and put that into filming our pop promo prelim task.

When it came to editing our prelim, we decided that we wanted the video to be fast paced with various shots, each having a different amount of time spent on them. We also had to learn to cut to the beat of the song which was something new to learn. The editing process was entirely different editing this prelim to our Thriller last year. The thriller was edited by shot choice whereas with our pop promo prelim we had to edit it in a different way that revolved around using the shots we had to emphasize the beat of the song. The video was of a faster paced song with lots of screaming so we wanted to have shorter shots and edit them together with a faster pace. This highlighted the genre of the music.

We wanted to create a rebellious mood to suggest anarchy and dissatisfaction at the normal ‘boring’ life. We did this by choosing our choice of shots as a mix of close ups and wide shots edited together with a fast pace. This is how our final product created the mood that we were trying to emphasize.

The video matched the track that it was designed for. The visuals are synced with the instruments and the singer is singing in synchronization with the track on playback. The visuals cut to the right beat and we highlighted this fact by showing some close ups of the drums in the video. The performance element and the narrative were similar to the overall style of the video.

Overall the choices we made for the video were made the promo more appealing to the target audience. The target audience is one of a young adult rebellious type. This music will appeal to them as it talks about rebellion and the band image is rebellious. We made the performance element of the promo one of anarchy which would appeal to the target audience. The promo fits with the intended image of the band and highlights their rebellious and deviant style.
